Strategies

1. Know your K-State Salina career resources.

2. Get personalized one-on-one help. Make an appointment with a Peer Career specialist.

3. Integrate the list of companies you want to work for with the list of companies coming to the Job Fair (companies interested in K-State grads).

4. Throughly research the company's website. What positions are they hiring for? What interesting projects is the company involved in? What is the company's strategic plan for the future? Why would you want to work for them/work on those projects?

5. Research the company through database info, industry projections, and news articles.

6. Jot down ways your experiences and interests can align with the company's missions, industry lingo you need to use, and questions you could ask at the Job Fair.

7. Be extremely cautious about information coming through social media. LinkedIn, for instance, has both reliable and unreliable sources for its info.

Student Tips for Career Fair Success

1. How can I Prepare for the Career Fair?

  • Have your resume reviewed by Career Services at least 7 days in advance to help highlight your knowledge and skills to employers.
  • Practice your thirty-second elevator pitch. Prepare a script that introduces yourself, states your knowledge of and interest in the company, and relates your background to the position or organization.
  • Research the list of employers attending in Handshake so that you can be informed and ready to discuss their company and positions.
  • Dress professionally and business-like. Wear modest and appropriate professional attire and comfortable shoes. Check-out the Career Closet in the SLC Lobby if needing something.

2. What to Bring to the Career Fair?

  • Student ID for Nametag generated from Handshake
  • A notepad and pen to take notes or jot down employer information.
  • More than enough copies of your resume to hand out to employers. You should also upload your resume to your Handshake profile! Employers can look up your information later on and invite you events and opportunities.
  • A friendly, positive attitude when you meet with employers and other students.

3. Research the companies

  • View the companies attending the fair in Handshake prior to the fair.

4. Prepare your elevator pitch

  • An elevator pitch is a quick 30-second summary of your background and career interests, including your name, major, education, training, and strengths.

5. What kind of questions should I ask employers at the career fair?

  • What are you looking for in a candidate?
  • What do you enjoy about working for this company?
  • What are some of the reasons you feel your company is attractive to young professionals?
  • What kinds of additional training or education would set me apart in this field?
  • I don’t have a traditional background in (field or function) but I have worked on (something
  • relevant). Would that be a good fit for (open role)?
  • I noticed you didn’t have any (type of role or roles on a specific team) open at this time. What
  • kinds of opportunities in those areas do you foresee down the line?
  • What does the hiring process for (open role) look like?
  • How does (Company name) support its employees as they look to grow and level up their skills
  • and responsibilities?
  • What kind of person is most successful at (Company name)?
  • What’s the best way to stay in touch with you?
  • What would be a good next step to take after meeting you here?

6. What questions should you AVOID asking at the Career Fair?

  • "What's the pay range for this position?" (Save this question for follow-up interviews)
  • "What about benefits and vacation time?" (These items are usually explained when the hiring manager offers you the job)
  • "Can you tell me about your company?" (This question shows that you haven't done your homework)

7. Accessibility & Accommodations

  • We are committed to making materials and services accessible for all students. If you require an accommodation to participate in this event, please contact the event organizer, Lauren Ebberts, at lebberts@ksu.edu by Wednesday, February 26, 2025.
